Feminine Sexuality

One must get the terms clear here: the word “female” concerns itself with the biological sex of a being, while “feminine” is used to describe a being’s role and function within society; the latter term is opposed with “masculine,” of course. Feminine sexuality refers to the sexual feelings of someone playing that role and function in society, and certainly does not limit itself to heterosexuality; feminine people do not necessarily only engage in sexual activity with either just male or masculine individuals.

This is an obviously and severely gray area of discussion, as there are indeed difficulties in determining whether a certain individual is completely feminine, as opposed to the ease of determining whether someone is female; indeed, it is not uncommon for a dominantly feminine person to boast masculine traits, and vice-versa. That being said, there is really no defining (and truly authoritative) characteristic of feminine sexuality, though this is by no means for lack of trying. The attempt at defining femininity has been going on for several decades, with Freud equating female with feminine and describing them with the traits of sexual and overall passivity, while in response feminists completely reject the claim, while others still highlight the importance of Freud’s work—a problematic yet necessary area of study indeed.

To conclude something that resists conclusion, sexuality begins with the self, and feminine sexuality is a decision by the self to affirm after a significant amount of introspection that, “yes, this sexuality is feminine,” while at the same time being open to the possibility of alteration. Calling one’s sexuality feminine is simply a process of naming, although one that is given for the individual to change at her/his own discretion, and will most definitely have apparent effects on one’s total identity and sexual lifestyle.
