Sexuality Today

In an age where several media dominantly influence and sometimes even directly control the identities of individuals exposed to them—sexuality does not escape that. It is a simple advertising strategy: sex sells, and thus the glorification of sexual gratification easily reaches and infects current music, television, cinema and the Internet. Such a glorification thus makes the younger, softer-minded generation thinking that all should be done for the goal of mindless and complete sexual gratification. Add to this the rampant exploitation of images of women and men which reduce their identities to their bodies.
Sexuality, however, must remain to be a serious facet of the human condition. While there is indeed nothing wrong with sexual gratification (as indeed its suppression can lead to deviant and violent sexual behavior), one must take the time to realize exactly why s/he wants sex in the first place. It is easy to fall into the trap of engaging in sexual acts merely because of the barrage of images plaguing the various media of today. Despite that, sexuality should be a decision of the self rather than a decision based solely on what others say; to extend this theory, one could even think of such a bombardment of thoughtless sexual images as subliminal coaxing into sex.
To end, sexuality today has its many potential pitfalls, and thus teenagers and adults alike must guard themselves or at least inquire into how institutions and other bodies influence their decisions. Such inquiry will eventually let sexuality come from the quiet of their solitude, becoming a more genuine and thus a more satisfying choice.
